Composite dental fillings, also known as “tooth-coloured” or “white” fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic resin and powdered glass filler that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
They are a popular choice for restoring decayed, chipped, or fractured teeth, especially in visible areas.

Benefits:

  • Aesthetics: Match natural tooth colour, making them virtually invisible.
  • Bonding to Tooth Structure: Chemically bond, strengthening the tooth and reducing fracture risk.
  • Minimal Tooth Alteration: Requires less removal of healthy tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings.
  • Versatility: Can be used to fill cavities, reshape teeth, or repair minor damage.
  • Reduced Sensitivity: The resin insulates the tooth, potentially reducing sensitivity to temperature changes.
  • Mercury-Free: An advantage for patients concerned about potential mercury exposure associated with amalgam fillings.

Placement procedure:

  1. Numbing: Local anaesthesia is administered to the tooth and surrounding area.
  2. Decay Removal: The decayed portion of the tooth is removed.
  3. Bonding Agent Application: A special bonding agent is applied and cured with a light.
  4. Composite Application: The composite material is applied in layers, each hardened with a curing light.
  5. Shaping and Polishing: The filling is shaped to match the tooth’s contours and then polished for a smooth, natural look and comfortable bite.

Composite fillings are durable, typically lasting 5 to 10 years.  Their lifespan can be affected by factors like location, size, oral hygiene habits, diet, and habits like teeth grinding (bruxism).

Based on the complexity of the fillings, your dentist may be able to complete one or two during a single visit.
