Scaling and sandblasting are two procedures that can be part of comprehensive dental hygiene and treatment, often recommended to prevent or treat gum disease and improve aesthetics.

Scaling

Purpose: Scaling is a fundamental procedure aimed at removing plaque and tartar (also called calculus) build up from the tooth surfaces, both above and below the gum line.
Process: Scaling involves the use of specialized tools, either manual or ultrasonic, to scrape away the hardened plaque and tartar deposits. These deposits are a primary cause of gum inflammation and infection.
Benefits: Scaling helps eliminate bacteria, reduce gum inflammation, and prevent the progression of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis).

Sandblasting
Purpose: Sandblasting, also known as air polishing or air abrasion, uses a pressurized stream of fine particles (dental sand, usually sodium bicarbonate or glycine) mixed with water to remove stains and plaque from the tooth surface

Process: A special device directs a jet of water and fine abrasive particles to clean the tooth surface, effectively eliminating surface discoloration from substances like coffee, tea, and tobacco.

Benefits: Sandblasting improves the aesthetics of the smile by removing stains and leaves teeth feeling smoother and looking brighter.

When are they used?

Scaling is a routine procedure recommended as part of regular dental cleanings to maintain oral health and prevent gum disease.
Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planning, involves scaling and smoothing the tooth roots to help gums reattach to the teeth, and it is performed when there are deep pockets between the gums and teeth due to advanced gum disease.

Sandblasting is often used after scaling to polish the teeth and remove any remaining surface stains.

Both scaling and sandblasting contribute significantly to good dental hygiene by removing plaque, tartar, and stains. This helps to prevent cavities, reduce gum inflammation, improve breath, and maintain a healthier oral environment overall. For individuals with existing gum disease, deep cleaning (scaling and root planning) is essential to halt its progression and prevent more serious complications like tooth loss.

Note
It’s important to remember that these procedures are performed by dental professionals and are safe. It is essential to discuss your specific oral health needs with your dentist or hygienist to determine the most appropriate dental plan for you.

Before the appointment

Brush and floss. Pre-cleaning makes the process smoother and more pleasant, although the hygienist will clean your teeth.

After the appointment

Mild sensitivity is normal. This usually subsides within a few hours to a day after the appointment.
Follow post-appointment care instructions. These may include recommendations for toothpaste or other oral care products.

By understanding the process and preparing for your appointment, you can make the most of your visit to the dental hygienist and ensure your oral health stays in optimal condition.
