Dental crowns and bridges are two common and effective solutions for restoring damaged or missing teeth.

Dental crowns

Purpose: A dental crown, or “cap,” covers a single tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and improving its appearance.
When used: Crowns are needed for teeth with extensive decay, large fillings, cracks, or after root canal treatment. They can also hold a bridge in place or cover a dental implant.
Materials: Crowns are made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, or metal alloys.
Benefits: Crowns strengthen and protect damaged teeth, improve aesthetics, restore chewing function, and offer a durable solution. They can last for many years with proper care.
Procedure: Typically involves two visits. The first involves preparing the tooth and taking impressions for the custom crown. A temporary crown is placed. The second visit involves cementing the permanent crown.

Dental bridges
Purpose: A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap.
Structure: It consists of artificial teeth (pontics) anchored to natural teeth or dental implants (abutments) on either side of the gap.

Types
Traditional: Most common, uses crowns on abutment teeth to support the pontics.
Implant-supported: Utilizes dental implants for support, offering enhanced stability and jawbone preservation.

Benefits: Restore a natural look, enable proper chewing and speech, and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting into the empty space. According to Carrollton Smiles, they evenly distribute bite forces.
Procedure: Similar to crowns, involves preparing abutment teeth, taking impressions, placing a temporary bridge, and then cementing the permanent bridge.

Key differences
A crown restores a single tooth, while a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. Crowns strengthen and protect damaged teeth, while bridges literally “bridge” the gap between existing teeth to replace missing ones.
